Binti by Nnedi Okorafor RE-REVIEW
by evie
For my last blog post, I'm going to do another review of Binti by Nnedi Okorafor. I haven't read it in a while, and I want to see if my thoughts on the story have changed. Also because it's a good book and I want another excuse to read it again. Now to the review:
This book's main character, a Himba girl named Binti, is given a chance to go to the prestigious school Oozma University. If she chooses to go there, she'll have to leave behind her home Earth, her family, and go against her traditions. Even if she does make the hard decision to leave, getting to the school is a whole other challenge. Making the journey across the galaxy is treacherous, with dangerous people like the Meduse lurking around every corner. Will Binti decide to leave her home to make the journey? Will she survive the trip to Oozma University? Read the book and find out (also, the story continues in the next two books so check those out if you like this one).
new and improved opinion!!
Now that I've reread the book, it's safe to say that I still like it a lot. The environments are rich and the author goes into a lot of detail describing pieces of it so you get a full picture of the setting (at the beginning she describes Binti's house and I could get a perfect picture of it in my head). Along with the environments, I like how the author describes people's actions a lot. Its not just 'they did this' but also why and how they did the action, and she describes it so naturally (it's kind of like a 'show-not-tell' thing). Like I said in my first review, the characters are fully fleshed out and their personalities are clear and fluid. I had no trouble figuring out who was talking during dialogue.
The plot of the story is fast, like really fast. I forgot how fast the plot moves, but then again, this book is only 90 pages long. The author does a good job of fitting the worldbuilding and story elements into such a short book, but I did feel like the some of the action was sped through at times. I feel like the author focuses more on the aftermath/effect of the action then the action itself, which isn't a bad thing, I just haven't seen many authors do that. Overall, I liked this book when I read it for the last blog post, and I still like it now. I recommend it to anyone who wants a fast-paced sci-fi adventure that also goes into some more serious topics, or just a nice quick story in general.
(the end- thanks for reading!!)
I liked how you posted an update on a book you've made a blog post on in the past. It's interesting to see how your perspective changes.
ReplyDeleteGreat job Evie! This is a really cool idea for a book blog and as i've read and enjoyed several of the authors books before i'll be sure to give this one a try!!!
ReplyDeleteNice post Evie! I like how you mentioned Okorafor's focus on the aftermath of action. I think that focus makes for a more complex and interesting book than one packed with mindless action. I definitely want to read Binti over the summer now!
