A review of Binti by Nnedi Okorafor!

The cover of Binti by Nnedi Okorafor
Summary (with NO spoilers)
This book is about a girl (Binti) who is the first Himba person to be accepted into Oozma University, the most prestigious school in the galaxy. To get there, she has to leave Earth, which would cause her to lose her place in her family and go against their traditions. Even if Binti does leave, the galaxy is a dangerous place, with hostile people like the Meduse, an alien race of which most have grown to fear. Will she decide to leave Earth? Will she make it to Oozma Uni or die trying?? I don't know, that's all I can say about this book without spoiling it.

My opinion (also no spoilers)
The characters and their personalities are fleshed-out very well, I could even tell while reading who was talking even when their names weren't by the sentence. The descriptions of these characters are very detailed, you can imagine what they look like in your head.
The actual plot of Binti is moved along at a moderately fast pace, which makes for a thrilling but still detailed story.
Overall, I liked this book a lot. I've read (and re-read) it in the past and it still doesn't get boring. I love how the author can build such a huge and unique world (or universe) in a less-than-100 page book. Like I've said, this book has so many details about the world and people around Binti it feels so real. I recommend Binti to anyone who likes Sci-fi and action, or just a cool story in general.

(end of review- bye!)

  2. I remember we read Akata Witch in class by the same author, and that was an excellent book. Now hearing about this book and the way you explained it, plus the science-fiction aspect, makes me even more interested in readin both this book and other books by this author. Great Job!

  3. Thanks for the book recommendation/review Evie! This book is totally new to me, but it sounds really good and I'm glad that I've heard of it now. I like action stories a lot, and I haven't found a good sci-fi novel to get into recently, but this one sounds great! I think stories with complex characters are some of the most interesting, and from your explanation of the different character descriptions and clear voices, it seems like Binti is one such book.
