Books I Read Because of the Cover
Books I Read Because of the Cover
Everyone always says to never judge a book by its cover. But to be honest, I have fallen guilty to picking a book because of how pretty the cover art is. Here are some of my favorite books that I picked because of the cover!
All the Light We Cannot See - Anthony Doerr
I was walking around a library, specifically in the historical fiction section, searching for a new book to read. One of the books on display caught my attention. The soft but dark blue gradient of the clouds leading to the beautiful European town in contrast to the bolded white title caught my attention.
All the Light We Cannot See follows the story of a blind French girl, Marie-Laure, and a German boy, Werner, who enlists in the military. The book takes place around the time of World War II in German-occupied France. The first part of the book tells the heartbreaking struggles and losses of Marie-Laure and Werner. Doerr carefully weaves the two characters’ story together, and through thrilling and unlikely circumstances, they meet each other in the latter half of the book.
This book was filled with convincing and impactful emotions. I cannot stress enough how well Doerr manages to convey the thoughts and feelings of each character. Doerr draws the reader straight into the book. I would 100% recommend this book, especially if you are a big fan of historical fiction!
See You in the Cosmos - Jack Cheng
In 6th grade, one of my classmates did a book talk on See You in the Cosmos. The first thing that caught my attention was the cover. It had this pretty space background with a white title. The character's iPod attached to the title that was connected to a rocket. The cover was just so pretty.
See You in the Cosmos follows 11-year-old Alex Petroski’s goal to launch his iPod into space. He records himself on his iPod in hopes of sending it to other lifeforms. As he journeys through different cities with his dog, he meets family, makes friends, and goes through so much more.
I have already written a brief review of this book. It was a heartwarming coming-of-age novel, with realistic characters that were each unique and complex. Cheng did a spectacular job seamlessly weaving each chapter and “audio recording” together. See You in the Cosmos is a beautiful book that I fully recommend as an easy read!
The Shadow Between Us - Tricia Levenseller
I was scrolling through the internet to find a book to read. After going through numerous Must-Read books blogs, one caught my attention immediately. An intricate black design of roses and a deep scarlet wallpaper act as the background to the silver dagger, boasting its red gemstones on the cover. The rich colors drew me in.
The Shadow Between Us follows Alessandra, the overlooked daughter of a minor nobleman, and her quest to gain power. She has a plan — manipulate the Shadow King, marry him, and then kill him and gain control of the kingdom. However, Alessandra is not the only one in pursuit of assassinating this mysterious and magical king. Not only does she need to keep him alive long enough so that she can be queen, Alessandra has to fight off any feelings for the Shadow king.
This YA novel was quite the thrilling read. I am not a big fan of romance, but Levenseller did an amazing job balancing love and adventure. The author also did a spectacular job diving into Alessandra’s complex character. The book contains some mature scenes, but I would definitely recommend this novel!

Ooh I'm also someone who likes to read books based on the cover, unfortunately it doesn't usually work out well for me though. I'm glad you found so many books that you liked!! The Shadows Between Us sounds like a good read, I might pick it up myself!
ReplyDeleteHi Sarisa! This is a creative premise for a blog and I really enjoyed reading it. I've heard of the Shadows Between Us before and it sounds like the book lives up to its cover! I thought this was really interesting, and I'll definitely add some of these to my list, great work :)
ReplyDeleteI'm also guilty of judging books by their covers (it works though). I've heard a lot about All the Light We Cannot See so I'll definitely try to read it now. Nice book reviews!
ReplyDeleteGreat post!! I often find myself being more attracted to certain covers than others as well, though I know that causes me to miss out on some great books. Out of all of these, I think the one that draws my attention the most is See You in the Cosmos. Great formatting and again, great post.
ReplyDeleteHey Sarisa! I usually judge books based on the cover, because the cover is supposed to be a refection on what's in the book, so I don't think its something to be guilty about. I read The Shadows Between us in 6th grade, and I loved it, even though that style cover is a bit more common now.
ReplyDeleteAs much as we want to idealize our perception of things, we unconsciously judge books by their cover all the time. Good selection, I do agree that these covers would make a reader more inclined to read them.
ReplyDeleteHi Sarisa! I agree on your premise, I too often judge books by the covers. However, these covers would deter me from reading these books at all. They look boring, plain, and almost just like every young adult book that can be found in the fiction section. These are the kind of books that I wouldn't pick out just by their cover. I think it's super interesting to see everyone's opinions on these things though. Good post!
ReplyDeleteNice post idea, Sarisa! Although the phrase "judging a book by its cover" is commonly used in a negative connotation, it can be very worth it to read a book that puts lots of effort into creating enticing book covers. Great post!
