Basic Summary
This section is going to be pretty short and vague since a LOT happens in this book and I don't want to spoil anything.
Winterkeep is about a series of events from the different perspectives of a group of people. It all starts with the suspicious drowning of two advisors from the region of Monsea. They died on the way to the continent of Torla, more specifically, the nation of Winterkeep. Bitterblue, the queen of Monsea, decides to travel there herself, with her spy, Hava, and friend, Giddon. Will she make it to Winterkeep? Will she find out what happened to her advisors? I guess you'll have to read the book to find out because no spoilers.
Also, there's this girl named Lovisa Cavenda. She lives in Winterkeep, is a student at the prestigious Winterkeep academy, and is the daughter of two very important political officials. She's a significant character later in the book.

My opinion
I like how the perspective of the narrator is handled in this book. It switches from one narrator to the next almost every chapter, usually after an important event happens. It builds off of what you previously read, and connects important details from person to person. Like, if there was a small out-of-place detail that one perceptive had, another perspective later would explain it. Or, one perspective would explain/see something early on that another would later have to use/figure out, so the reader is already aware because of the earlier explanation. (Sorry if this explanation was confusing, I just thought this was really cool and well done. )
I really enjoyed reading this book! I love how structured the environments are, it makes it seem like the regions in Winterkeep are actual places, and how interesting the characters are. I recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy, mystery, and foxes.
(This book is a part of the Graceling series, so you can also check those out if you're interested. Though, I read this book without reading the first three and I understood what was going on pretty well.)

  1. I've always liked fantasy books as well as books that change perspectives. I think it allows the book to have so much more detail. Overall, good review. I liked how you gave us a few names of the characters and a basic plot without spoiling anything.

  2. Thanks for the review Evie! I had heard of the Graceling series before, but I sort of forgot about it until I read this! I think good characters and great setting are always fun, because it makes the story more immersive, so I'm excited about that. Is this is a sequel, prequel, or the first book in the series? It was kind of unclear, and I've heard of Graceling before, but I've also definitely read series where the author sets multiple stories in the same world. I'm wondering because I'd like to read Winterkeep but wouldn't want to start with the 3rd book in the series or something like that.

    1. i think it's the fourth book in the series, but you can read it independently and it'll still make sense. (This is the only book that I have read in the Graceling series so far). The other three books would give more context to the past of the characters, though.

  3. Oh I heard this book was part of a series, does that mean I need to read the other books first or can i read this one by itself?
But anyway, I really did like your review, I usually like stories that have multiple narrators and the cover art looks beautiful, I think I'll eventually give this one a try!!

    1. You can read this one by itself, reading the rest of the books would mostly give some background information about the characters.
